Italics in Romans 5:18

Postby Brethren » 21 May 2015, 12:39

Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

This came from KJV:PCE used in e-Sword. I have no problem with that.

But at a forum that allows conversations in video instead of text like here, a Jehovah's Witnesses asked me why there are no Greek to support that, pointing to a Green's Interlinear bible which uses King James II.

In the first instance, italics have two functions:

1. To bring out in English the exact meaning of the Greek, where it takes more words in English to communicate the meaning, and

2. To indicate where only a minority of Greek MSS have a rendering.

Thus, either way, to say that those words in italics are not in Greek would be incorrect.
